La velocidad de obturación no solo sirve para darle mayor o menor exposición a nuestras fotografías. Quizás en fotografías más normales, como de paisaje o de retrato, en las que nuestro punto de interés no se mueve en absoluto, no le des mayor importancia a la velocidad. Sin embargo, en otros tipos de fotografía dominar la velocidad de obturación será clave para conseguir buenos resultados.
En este artículo queremos presentarte diversas situaciones en las que la velocidad de obturación será clave, y enseñarte así cómo configurarla en cada caso para conseguir exactamente la foto que estabas buscando. ¡No te lo pierdas!

La velocidad de obturación es el tiempo que va a permanecer el obturador de nuestra cámara abierto, que es el dispositivo que deja pasar la luz hacia el sensor. Se podría decir que la velocidad de obturación es básicamente el tiempo que tardará en hacerse nuestra fotografía.
Puede durar desde una pequeñísima fracción de segundo, hasta diversos segundos e incluso minutos. Cuando la velocidad de obturación es mayor que un segundo se suele pasar a llamar «tiempo de exposición».

La velocidad de obturación forma parte del famoso triángulo de la exposición, formado también por la apertura de diafragma y la sensibilidad ISO. Jugando con estos 3 parámetros conseguirás obtener una exposición adecuada de tu fotografía.
En los siguientes ejemplos te aconsejaremos situar la velocidad de obturación en unos niveles concretos. Así pues, deberás compensar esto con los otros dos parámetros para exponer correctamente tu fotografía. Para hacerlo, puedes disparar una fotografía bien expuesta con los parámetros habituales, y ayudarte de la Ley de reciprocidad para saber cómo compensar la subida o bajada de la velocidad de obturación que requieras para cada situación.

10 Situaciones en las que Requerirás Dominar la Velocidad de Obturación
Ahora que ya recuerdas qué es la velocidad de obturación, vamos a ver 10 situaciones diferentes en las que necesitarás dominarla para poder conseguir un buen resultado.
1. Congelar el Movimiento
Existen muchas situaciones en las que vas a necesitar congelar un movimiento. Fotografiar a alguien corriendo sin que salga movido, captar a tu mascota mientras salta o congelar las gotitas de agua de una fuente o cascada son ejemplos muy claros de este tipo de situación.
Para ello, necesitarás aumentar la velocidad de obturación, para que la cámara dispare lo suficientemente rápido como para congelar el movimiento de tu sujeto e impedir que salga movido. Evidentemente cada sujeto va a tener una velocidad diferente, por lo que lo mejor será hacer algunas pruebas para averiguar qué velocidad de obturación requieres para congelar su movimiento.

Para que te hagas una idea, normalmente usaríamos velocidades como 1/1000 seg. para vehículos rápidos o animales corriendo, 1/500 seg. para bicicletas y 1/250 seg. para las olas del mar. Aun así, esto son velocidades orientativas, ya que la velocidad de cualquiera de estos motivos fotográficos puede variar mucho.
Por eso lo mejor que puedes hacer es realizar algunas pruebas y, si no tienes la opción, mejor usar una velocidad lo suficientemente alta, aunque sea demasiado, para no arriesgarte a perder la foto. Piensa que siempre será mejor obtener una foto bien hecha aunque con algo de ruido por haber tenido que compensar esa velocidad de obturación excesiva, que obtener una foto con el centro de interés trepidado.

2. Barridos
Muchas veces con congelar el movimiento no nos basta. A veces, congelar por completo el movimiento puede hacer que nuestra fotografía no transmita lo que buscamos. Por ejemplo, si congelamos el movimiento de una moto de carreras, va a parecer que está parada, no va a transmitirnos esa sensación de velocidad vertiginosa.
Para este tipo de fotografías, en que queremos que un sujeto en movimiento quede congelado pero no perder ese efecto de velocidad, se suele usar el barrido. El barrido es una técnica a la que cuesta un poco cogerle el punto, pero una vez la controles verás lo sencillo que te resulta conseguir buenos resultados.
Para realizar un barrido deberás usar una velocidad de obturación lenta y seguir a tu sujeto a su misma velocidad mientras el obturador está abierto. Así, tu sujeto aparecerá estático mientras que el fondo se verá trepidado, dando esa sensación de velocidad. Si lo prefieres, puedes hacer uso de un trípode para ayudarte a seguir a tu sujeto en línea recta.
Normalmente suelen usarse velocidades de 1/70 o 1/50 seg., aunque puedes arriesgarte y atreverte a disparar a 1/30 seg. Cuanto más lenta sea la velocidad de obturación mayor será el efecto de barrido, pero también será más difícil conseguir que tu sujeto no se trepide.

3. Efecto Zoom
El efecto zoom (o zooming) sigue la misma premisa que un barrido, solo que en lugar de desplazar la cámara de manera lateral la desplazaremos hacia adelante (o hacia atrás) o, en su defecto, variaremos el zoom con el anillo del objetivo.
Así pues, de la misma manera que antes, usaremos velocidades de obturación lentas aunque tampoco demasiado para evitar trepidación en nuestro sujeto. Mientras el obturador esté abierto, moveremos la cámara o el anillo del zoom, procurando mantener a nuestro sujeto situado en la misma posición, para conservar su nitidez y conseguir el fondo trepidado. Esta trepidación seguirá el movimiento que hayamos hecho, así que creará un desenfoque de movimiento hacia nuestro sujeto, transmitiendo velocidad, agobio o desesperación, por ejemplo.
Si usas un objetivo zoom, te será más fácil conseguir este efecto si montas la cámara sobre un trípode.

4. Trepidación Creativa
La trepidación no siempre es un error técnico. Algunas veces se puede usar la trepidación para crear fotografías creativas, que transmitan alguna sensación mediante esa trepidación. Por ejemplo, hace poco me preguntaba una usuaria cómo poder sacar unas manos movidas, porque iba a hacer unas fotografías a unos enfermos de parkingson. También puedes usar este recurso, por ejemplo, para transmitir sensación de velocidad, o de mareo y desorientación.
Para conseguir que nuestro centro de interés se trepide, pero no nuestro fondo, lo mejor será montar nuestra cámara sobre un trípode y usar velocidades lentas. Si no dispones de un trípode, calcula cuál es la velocidad más lenta que puedes aguantar sin trepidar (normalmente rondará el 1/30 seg.), y usa algunos trucos para ganar estabilidad, como pegar los codos a tu cuerpo, abrir las piernas o apoyarte en una pared o superficie.
Así pues, con la cámara bien estabilizada, haremos que nuestro sujeto se mueva mientras el obturador esté abierto, todo lo contrario a lo que se suele recomendar. Así conseguiremos que aparezca movido o trepidado en nuestra fotografía. Como siempre, si un efecto es buscado no debe considerarse un fallo de técnica, y así es en este caso.

5. Fotografías de Noche o con Poca Luz
Cuando el sol empieza a esconderse habrás notado que tu cámara empieza a requerir una mayor cantidad de luz. Y cuando ya es de noche, incluso aunque estemos iluminados por las farolas de la ciudad, nos va a seguir faltando luz para exponer nuestra fotografía correctamente.
En estas situaciones tendrás que bajar la velocidad lo máximo posible para ganar luz sin tener que subir la ISO demasiado, para evitar el ruido. Eso sí, no la bajes demasiado si no quieres que tu sujeto salga trepidado. Aunque uses un trípode, piensa que si tu centro de interés es una persona, ella también se moverá. Así pues, intenta usar velocidades de obturación que ronden los 1/30 o 1/40 segundos, y exponer correctamente tu fotografía abriendo el diafragma al máximo y subiendo la ISO lo que haga falta.

6. Efecto Seda
El efecto seda es uno de los efectos más buscados en fotografías de paisaje que contengan agua (ríos, cascadas o el mar). Ese aspecto tan suave del agua transmite una belleza y una paz muy atractivas. ¿Pero qué es realmente el efecto seda? No es más que el agua trepidada; el movimiento del agua registrado en una larga exposición.
Así pues, para conseguir el efecto seda en el agua deberás usar velocidades de obturación largas, normalmente más lentas que 1 segundo. Cuanto más rápido y con más fuerza corra el agua, menor velocidad requerirás para conseguir el efecto seda.
Para este tipo de fotografía sí vas a necesitar normalmente contar con un trípode, ya que en la mayoría de ocasiones vas a disparar a velocidades más lentas que lo que tu pulso te puede permitir. Además, normalmente también requerirás el uso de un filtro de densidad neutra (ND), sobre todo si fotografías a plena luz del día, para evitar que tu fotografía se sobreexponga a causa de una velocidad de obturación tan lenta.

7. Nubes en Movimiento
Las nubes en movimiento se consiguen de la misma manera que el efecto seda del agua: usando velocidades de obturación muy lentas. Cuanto más viento haga y más rápido se muevan las nubes, menor velocidad de obturación requerirás para que se note este efecto. Aun así, es probable que requieras tiempos de exposición de varios segundos para que se note bien el movimiento en las nubes.
De la misma manera que con el efecto seda, vamos a necesitar un trípode y un filtro de densidad neutra (ND) si disparamos de día.

8. Fotos a Estrellas
La fotografía nocturna es un tipo de fotografía muy especial. Con los parámetros habituales o el modo automático no conseguiremos sacar gran cosa. Uno de los parámetros más importantes que deberemos dominar para conseguir un buen resultado, es la velocidad de obturación.
Si queremos fotografiar las estrellas vamos a tener que usar tiempos de exposición bastante largos, de entre 15 y 30 segundos. Eso sí, ten en cuenta que la rotación de la tierra hará que las estrellas salgan movidas si nos pasamos de cierta velocidad. Aunque esto va a depender mucho de la distancia focal que estés usando, normalmente se sitúa el límite entre los 25 y 30 segundos.
Aunque, por otra parte, sacar las estrellas movidas no tiene por qué ser un fallo técnico. Las fotografías circumpolares precisamente utilizan esto para captar las trazas que van dejando las estrellas y conseguir capturas muy originales.

9. Fotografías de Lightpainting
El lightpainting es otro tipo de fotografía nocturna en el que la velocidad de obturación será clave. Como su nombre indica, el lightpainting consiste básicamente en pintar con luz. Cualquier herramienta que produzca luz será susceptible de ser usada para crear estas originales fotografías: linternas, flashes, sables láser, juguetes con luz, herramientas específicamente diseñadas para lightpainting, las luces de los coches e incluso fuego y chispas.
Para «pintar con luz» simplemente deberemos disparar una fotografía de larga exposición y mover la fuente de luz haciendo la forma que nosotros queramos, mientras el obturador permanezca abierto. Así, todo el movimiento quedará registrado, creando formas y dibujos, o alumbrando selectivamente diferentes zonas de la fotografía.
El problema que nos encontramos con el lightpainting es que, normalmente, a priori no sabremos cuánto tiempo vamos a necesitar para hacerlo. Puede que pongas 10 segundos de exposición y te quedes corto, o que pongas 20 y te sobre demasiado tiempo. Afortunadamente contamos con el modo Bulb, con el que podremos decidir exactamente cuándo queremos que acabe nuestra fotografía. Para usarlo cómodamente necesitarás usar un disparador remoto. Con él simplemente deberás pulsar cuando quieras que la cámara abra el obturador, y volver a pulsar para cerrarlo y terminar así la foto.

10. Fotografía con Flash
Tanto si usas el flash montado sobre la zapata de tu cámara, como si usas iluminación strobist o incluso flashes de estudio, tendrás que tener muy en cuenta la velocidad de obturación. A no ser que uses flashes especiales con sincronización de alta velocidad (HSS), normalmente no vas a poder subir la velocidad más de 1/200 o 1/250, ya que ésta es la velocidad de sincronización de la mayoría de flashes. Si superas esta velocidad te aparecerá la tan temida «cortinilla», es decir, una banda más oscura en tu fotografía.

Esto ocurre porque, al usar una velocidad de obturación tan rápida, el flash dispara cuando la cortinilla del obturador ya está cerrándose, impidiendo así que su luz alcance a toda la fotografía.
Si estás en interior o en un ambiente muy oscuro la cortinilla será negra, pero si estás de día en exteriores, aunque se note menos, también está ahí. Verás que el flash tan solo habrá alcanzado una parte de tu sujeto.
